Synopsis

All Dr. Sloan Copeland needed was someone to watch her kids. What she found was the man of her dreams…

After a nasty divorce and a thousand mile move, Dr. Sloan Copeland and her twin daughters are finally getting the hang of their new life in Los Angeles. When their live-in nanny bails with no warning, Sloan is left scrambling to find a competent caretaker to wrangle her smart, sensitive girls. Nothing less will do.

Enter Rafe Whitcomb. He’s all of those things, not to mention good-natured and one heck of a whiz in the kitchen. He’s also tall, and handsome, and bearded, and ripped, and tatted, wrist to neck.

It doesn’t take long for the Copelands to invite Rafe into their home. Just as quickly, both Sloan and Rafe find themselves succumbing to a heady mutual attraction, neither of them wants to deny. With every minute they spend under the same roof, this working mom can’t help but wonder if Rafe can handle all her needs…

Review

Lately, my romance choices have been leaning dark, so Rafe was a refreshing read.  It was just a sweet story about two people falling for each other.

The characters were fantastic.  I especially loved the juxtaposition to social norms; Sloan is a young black woman who employees a white man as her nanny.  Growing up with my mother being the breadwinner and my step-father staying home to raise me, it wasn’t unconventional to me, but I know it is unconventional to many. I immediately liked Sloane and Rafe, and while there was a little insta-love here, it is easily forgivable.

Reading Rafe, I kept thinking, this is mom-porn.  A hot guy who is good with your kids and, for all intents and purposes, perfect in just about every other way.  I am not complaining, but this is an excellent example of my romance as a fantasy argument.  The plot wasn’t much more than just two people falling for each other, and you, as I mentioned, it was a nice break from the twisted stuff I’ve been reading lately.   I was pleasantly surprised how the characters were able to communicate so freely with each other.  No silly miscommunications in this book, thank goodness.

I enjoyed Rafe. It was sweet, cute, and the right amount of steamy.  I will certainly be checking out more books by this author.
