Synopsis

When Viola Caroll was presumed dead at Waterloo she took the opportunity to live, at last, as herself. But freedom does not come without a price, and Viola paid for hers with the loss of her wealth, her title, and her closest companion, Justin de Vere, the Duke of Gracewood.

Only when their families reconnect, years after the war, does Viola learn how deep that loss truly was. Shattered without her, Gracewood has retreated so far into grief that Viola barely recognises her old friend in the lonely, brooding man he has become.

As Viola strives to bring Gracewood back to himself, fresh desires give new names to old feelings. Feelings that would have been impossible once and may be impossible still, but which Viola cannot deny. Even if they cost her everything, all over again.

Review

There was so much I loved about A Lady and a Duke! It was so much more than I could ever hope for.

The chemistry between Viola and Gracewood was terrific. I was slightly concerned about how their romance would go, but Gracewood’s near-immediate acceptance of Viola was fantastic. I loved how everyone in Viola’s life accepted her just as she was. Gracewood was far from perfect, injured from the war and suffering from PTSD and other mental issues for years of abuse. He was flawed but was trying to improve, and I had so much respect for that.

The side characters in this book were amazing!!! I loved them all, and they made me laugh out loud several times. They were all little outcasts themselves, which only made me love them more.

Viola and Gracewood, their relationship, and their demons were the main plot, but there were some very fun historical romance plot points. I loved this book so much! I cannot recommend this book enough.
