Synopsis

The fae abandoned this world to us. And the ones with power rule.

Gold.

Gold floors, gold walls, gold furniture, gold clothes. In Highbell, in the castle built into the frozen mountains, everything is made of gold.

Even me.

King Midas rescued me. Dug me out of the slums and placed me on a pedestal. I’m called his precious. His favored. I’m the woman he Gold-Touched to show everyone that I belong to him. To show how powerful he is. He gave me protection, and I gave him my heart. And even though I don’t leave the confines of the palace, I’m safe.

Until war comes to the kingdom and a deal is struck.

Suddenly, my trust is broken. My love is challenged. And I realize that everything I thought I knew about Midas might be wrong.

Because these bars I’m kept in, no matter how gilded, are still just a cage. But the monsters on the other side might make me wish I’d never left.

Review

I have heard mixed reviews of Gild, and now I understand why. The first book was more of a prequel. It was basically all set up, and it wasn’t until the end, like the last five chapters end that the story started to get going.

The story is all set up. You learn the background of the six kingdoms and the main character, but it was clear to me early on that something else was going to happen. This is not the story of Auren and Midas, so I was a little disappointed that so much time was spent on that, especially when they really didn’t have many scenes together. This book would have been better served if it had cut down on some of the backstories. There was a lot of telling not showing, and I honestly didn’t even like Auren all that much until it got closer to the end.

So little happened toward the overall plot in this book that I honestly can’t say with certainty what this overall series is about. The ending was great, and because of that, and because I’ve enjoyed other Raven Kennedy books, I will continue this series, but I also understand why people might not be so inclined to do that.
