Synopsis

For ten years, I’ve lived in a gilded cage inside King Midas’s golden castle. But one night changed everything.

Now I’m here, a prisoner of Fourth Kingdom’s army, and I’m not sure if I’m going to make it out of this in one piece. They’re marching to battle, and I’m the bargaining chip that will either douse the fire or spark a war.

At the heart of my fear, my worry, there’s him—Commander Rip.

Known for his brutality on the battlefield, his viciousness is unsurpassed. But I know the truth about what he is.

Fae.

The betrayers. The murderers. The ones who nearly destroyed Orea, wiping out Seventh Kingdom in the process. Rip has power sizzling beneath this skin and glinting spikes down his spine. But his eyes—his eyes are the most compelling of all.

When he turns those black eyes on me, I feel captive for an entirely different reason.

I may be out of my cage, but I’m not free, not even close. In the game of kings and armies, I’m the gilded pawn. The question is, can I out maneuver them?

Review

So I didn’t love Gild, and I almost didn’t continue the series. However, I am happy I did, or I would have missed the fantastic story in Glint!

Gild is truly the prequel to this story! So much becomes clear in this book and yet so much still remains a mystery. Auren begins to find her strength in this book. Auren finally begins to see the truth about Midas, and we begin to understand her loyalty to him. The annoyance I felt for Auren in the first book becomes understanding. In this book.
While I still have some mixed feelings toward Auren, I know exactly how I feel about Commander Rip, and it’s that I love him. I love the trust he has in people and how he wants people to find their strength. I especially love how he treats Auren. He’s an extraordinary leader, and it was even more evident when compared to Midas. It was nice to see Auren start to realize that too.

Rip and Auren’s scenes were great, and while this is a sloooow burn, I have faith that it will progress to where I want it to. But it was Auren’s scenes with the other characters that showed me her true nature. I think she is way too much of a bleeding heart, and I would have liked to see her be more selfish.

I can’t wait to read the next book, and especially more Rip.
